Healing thermal water from Bad Waltersdorf

Our most valuable asset

It lies 1,200 metres below the surface, has a temperature of 62 °C and is at least 10,000 years old. The Bad Waltersdorf healing thermal water is one of the highest-quality healing thermal waters in Austria.

Since 1982 it has been recognised by the Styrian provincial government as a healing resource. The basis for this is an unusual chemical composition that makes the water special in its class.

What makes the water special

The Bad Waltersdorf healing thermal water is a sodium hydrogen carbonate chloride solution of hypotonic concentration. This means: it is lower in salt than human blood and is therefore particularly gentle on skin and mucous membranes.

Sodium accounts for 94.7% of the dissolved cations. Hydrogen carbonate, at 69.4%, forms the dominant share of anions and is mainly responsible for the anti-inflammatory and deacidifying properties of the water. Lithium is also present, a trace element to which calming and mood-lifting properties are attributed in balneology (the study of healing baths). In addition, the water contains fluoride, which strengthens bone density and tooth enamel.

Due to the almost complete absence of alkaline earths (calcium and magnesium are present only in very small amounts), the water is exceptionally soft. This is exactly what makes it so gentle on joints, skin and tissue.

In the pool the water arrives cooled to 27 to 36 °C, the temperature range in which the effect unfolds best.

What science says about it

The relaxing effect of thermal water is not just a feeling. A study by the Medical University of Graz, carried out in the Styrian thermal region, has shown: just 25 minutes of bathing measurably lowers the cortisol level in saliva. Cortisol is the physiological marker for stress in the body.

Particularly remarkable: the effect is greatest in highly stressed people. The thermal water even outperforms progressive muscle relaxation according to Jacobson, a classic, therapeutically recognised relaxation method.

Thermal stimuli act via skin receptors directly on the autonomic nervous system. Above all, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, the part of the nervous system responsible for regeneration and recovery.

What the healing thermal water supports

The mineral-rich, particularly soft water has a deep effect on the organism through its thermal, physical and chemical stimuli.

It has been proven to support:

For the following conditions we recommend clarification with your family doctor before bathing:

Heart muscle weakness, severe circulatory disorders, smoker’s leg, varicose veins, acute phlebitis, thrombosis, extreme high blood pressure, after a heart attack or stroke, acute joint inflammation, bronchial asthma.

Water

The most precious asset that no one sees

An average person in Austria uses around 130 to 160 litres of visible water every day for showering, cooking and drinking. If you add the so-called virtual water, i.e. the water contained in the production of all consumed products, the actual consumption is up to 7,200 litres per day.

This much water is consumed:

Of all the water on Earth, only 3% is fresh water. Of this 3%, only 25% is available as accessible drinking water, which is 0.0001% of the total amount of water on our planet. The rest is locked in permanent ice.

The healing thermal water that rests here at a depth of 1,200 metres is over 10,000 years old. It is a resource that does not regrow. We draw on it with care.

Virtual water is invisible, but real. It was consumed by fields, factories and supply chains long before the product reaches us. The concept goes back to the British scientist John Anthony Allan, who developed it in the 1990s.
